Last month I had the pleasure of visiting Toronto and seeing the Blue Jays play in their stadium. It was a great up & down game against the Red Sox. And while I did decide to root root root for the home team, they eventually lost, but it was still fun. Very cool stadium with an amazing view of the CN Tower right next door.
One thing that interested me was that during the seventh inning stretch they sang "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" instead of "God Bless America". Which makes sense, of course, but it still struck me how nice it was that this secular game was permitted to remain so. I really enjoyed that.
You can thus imagine my delight tonight when the same thing happened at the Phillies game. Admittedly it had been a couple of years since my last Phillies game, but each time we went between 2005 and 2008 we were subjected to GBA during the seventh inning. Maybe now it has become the norm to not sing that during the game. I certainly hope so!
So thank you very much, Phillies, for maintaining one of the best traditions of baseball and keeping the sacred out of the secular. I really appreciate it.
